Sulfur dioxide, an invisible gas with a suffocating odor, boasts a boiling point of -10 °C and is denser than air. Inhalation is extremely hazardous, causing eye and mucous membrane irritation. Prolonged exposure to heat or fire can cause violent container ruptures, leading to potential hazards. This gas is utilized predominantly in chemical manufacturing, paper pulping, metal processing, and the food industry.
Sulfur dioxide serves numerous purposes, including:
1. Synthesizing sulfites, hydrogen sulfites, and sulfuric acid
2. Sterilizing fermentation equipment in wine and beer production to prevent mold and bacterial growth, and to regulate fermentation
3. Used in disinfecting and fumigation
4. Utilized as environmental calibration gases
